FEBRUARY ARTICLE - Infant Feeding
From Birth to 5 or 6 months
Breast milk is definitely best for you and your baby. When you breast feed your new born baby you will feel like there is a piece of string attached to your navel and when your baby sucks to feed you will feel that piece of string being pulled from inside.
This is helping your uterus get back into shape.

The Goodness in Breast Milk
Breast milk is easily digested and absorbed by your baby.
Your breast milk contains antibodies to help build your babies immune system, which protect your baby from infection and decreases risk of allergies.

Breast feeding also enhances your bond with your new born baby.

Breast milk is convenient and the most nutritious and cheapest from of nutrition for your baby.

Composition of breast milk:

  • Carbohydrate 38%
  • Protein 7%
  • Fat 55%

Breast milk contains special fats (long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids) that are crucial for brain development.

Formula Feeding
For mothers who decide not to breast feed or are unable to breast feed your new born baby, infant formula milk may be used. Infant formula milk is designed to mimic breast milk as much as possible and is nutritionally complete.

Different Varieties of Infant Formula Milk

  • Cow’s milk based – most common type
  • Soya based – used by babies with documented cow’s milk intolerance or allergy as prescribed by your babies Doctor.
  • Protein hydrolysate – for babies with special health care needs requiring a formula with the protein content broken down or pre-digested to make it easier to digest.
  • Lactose free – for babies with lactose intolerance; sometimes successfully used for colic or fussiness.
